So I’m a junior right now and i do dragon boat for a sport(i hate how people think dragon boat is “easy” because the only thing we do is paddle, well if you ever try paddling for 2 hours straight and have timing with everyone else, you’ll see what i mean), ANYWHOOO~, This is my 2nd season so far, i plan on doing it until i graduate which is 5 seasons total. How does this look on my applications, do colleges look as dragon boat as a minor sport?? or something like that because dragon boat isn’t a well known sport.

It think it sounds as intense as rowing and no one thinks rowing is a joke. Anyway colleges look for commitment and leadership, not necessarily intense well known sports. So keep doing it and try and be a team/crew leader and it should look good

That sounds sooooooo cool!!! Do it. It sounds very unique. How can anyone think rowing is easy?

Now a days, there are Dragon Boat teams in elite colleges. Stanford has one, they compete in the Forster City festival.

Dragon Boat is a very intense EC. When my sister in law was in HK, she was asked to participate in a race. They practiced for months before the race. She said it was hardest thing, and she was a very atheletic person.

I think you could write a good essay about the EC too. Why Dragon Boat, and not other ECs?

Because like others EC’s, sports, etc. Dragon Boat requires you to work together as a WHOLE, everyone else could be good and you could be crappy, then your boat would be crappy because of that one person. Dragon Boat is mainly focused on team cooperation and team work. And yeah it is so intense and very hard, the Buks(Racing boats) weigh about 2,500 pounds! Thats without the paddlers, drummer, and steersman on it, if you say everyone is average 150, that would be 150 x 22 = 3300 extra pounds, 2500 + 3300 = 5800 pounds! And if you’re training, you’re using HK boats, they weigh 5,000 freaking pounds, not including everyone’s weight! :S. So hard, i’ve paddled in a HK before, hecka hard.

@porkperson : Haha yeah it is cool , we play games too theres some fun in dragon boat too, we also have group bonding and have boat hangouts so we can get to know each other better, you should try it if you ever have the chance.

@artloversplus : Yeah, UCLA has a team too!

@oldfort : So true, Dragon Boat is soooo hard, it has a reputation for having buff people doing it haha. Yeah your sister is correct, dragon boat isn’t easy AT ALL, you have to train for months just for 1 single race(It’s worth it, the adrenaline and feeling you get on race day, WHOO makes me shiver haha, its a intense feeling)

I’m guessing it looks like any other sport on an app.

^Agreed.
10char

yes. it looks like a sport. But if you are committed to ANY sport, regardless of what it is, it is always good for your app

^Though I have heard that team accomplishments in general are less impressive than individual accomplishments

Colleges like to see that you are committed and involved. If you love dragon boat racing, then keep doing it. Would you really want to attend a college that didn’t value your participation in something that is important to you?
