How does dropping a class affect my admission?

I applied to moderately competitive American&Canadian schools such as UCB, U of Michigan, and U of Toronto as well as some British universities. Although I was taking 5 AP classes in the first semester, I’m going to drop one of them, since I have to take AP Biology test on May and I’ve never taken its class. The reason why I have to take this test is that my British schools require me to get 5 for their acceptance. They are going to give me conditional acceptance, so I can get offer from them after getting 5 in AP Bio. (This system looks kinda strange to most of us, but it works.)

So, I cannot keep taking my two-semester-long AP Macroeconomics class, which is too time-consuming for me to continue taking if I will begin studying AP Biology by myself. I’m going to drop this class and instead take normal economics class. How does this decision affect my admission?

**Please don’t worry about the fact that I began so late to study for AP Bio, which is possibly one of the hardest and most time-consuming exam in AP. I have some background for this test, so I’m sure I can do well in the test, if I can drop AP Macro.

I dropped a class and switched around my schedule as well, but I did it towards the middle of first semester, before I applied to any schools (mid-October).

Well, first, it might not be possible for you to drop classes this late in the year? I don’t know how your high school regulates this sort of thing, but I was dropping a business elective and it was really difficult for me to do so. I had to write an appeal to the head guidance counselor and everything, but it’s because without that elective I wouldn’t be a fully qualified senior. However, the guidance office kind of took pity on me and let me drop the class. So make sure that you can drop the class for sure!

It doesn’t really affect your admission unless you have to re-send your transcript so your schools have both copies (the one with 5 AP’s and the new one). Even then, 5 AP’s is a LOT, so they might understand how rigorous your course load is and not even give it a second thought. I wouldn’t worry, but talk it over with your guidance counselor.

I applied to universities in the U.K. as well! Got 2 conditional offers last week  Where did you apply?

In my school, it is actually possible for me to drop this class at the end of the first semester, so that I can take another downgraded class from the beginning of the second semester. My counselor and vice principal told me so.

I haven’t finished application to universities in the U.K. yet, so I’m surprised to see other people who already got offers! I applied to ICL, UCL, U of Edinburgh, Durham Uni, and U of York. If I will get 5 in the next AP Bio, I will probably be accepted by some of them; otherwise, I will have no chance lol

UC requires you to notify them in writing if you drop/change a class or get below a C in a class. I would also recommend that you notify any other schools you applied to that you are making this change and why.

Thanks for reminding me that. I hope universities will understand my situation by that way.

Finish them soon! Some universities are really quick with their replies. I applied on November 22nd and heard back on the 28th, December 2nd, and December 4th. Received conditionals from University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow  still waiting on one more course at Edinburgh and one at King’s College London!

Yeah, after getting the result of SAT, I will immediately finish it. I’m glad to hear that their response is so fast. U of Edinburgh is pretty nice university, so I hope I will get into the biological science course. Good luck.
