How Does Google Voice Work?

I am thinking of doing Google Voice, because I would like to have a second telephone number.

The thing is that I just do not quite understand it.

If I open up a Google Voice account, then I would have to use my current telephone number as a forwarding number, right? And so that would mean that everyone who has my Google Voice number would also know my personal telephone number as well? Or am I totally wrong?

If anyone has the time and patience to assist me in learning more of this I would greatly appreciate it. I am trying to learn how to, basically, have a “business” number as well as a “personal” number in order to best learn how to keep those two things separate.

I’ve used GV a bit. GV, if i understand it correctly, is separate from your other # so if you give it out, those contacts will only know your GV #. If your GV # is called, it will forward it to your phone and you will receive the call through a Google Voice App instead of the regular phone app. Thats my basic understanding of it from when I used it a couple months back. I might also be mistaken, but I heard GV was only going to be free for a short time. I think last year Google said it would be free til sometime in '11 so i’d keep that in mind. Its gotta be outrageous to give out these numbers and phone calls for free so you almost can’t blame them.
