In my freshman year I had a gpa of 3.4. Then my sophmore year I had a 3.8. And junior and senior years were both 4.0 while taking IB classes. I wanted to know how this will affect my chances into univerisities. Do I still have a chance at top 30 schools?
It can only help.
Do you have a chance - if you apply, sure. Will you get in?
That’s up to the schools.
GPAs vary by high school, etc.
I’d be more concerned with what you want to study and where it’s best to study - then by top 30.
But if you think there’s a big difference between those tied at 30 (US News):
UCD
UCSD
UF
USC
That’s just silly - so Texas is #32 - it stinks? BC at 39 - horrible? No one would ever choose #40 Tufts over those, #47 Wake Forest, #53 W&M, #73 Tulane and on and on.
Oh wait, yes they would.
Find the right fit (including schools strong in your major) and don’t focus on what a magazine says.
Good luck.
Would appling to Georgtown for political science be possible. I also applying to my state school (UGA).
If you fill out their application - and it’s a lot of extra work - then yes it’s possible.
You are more than a GPA.
You are a test. You are extra curriculars. You are essays and LORs. You are rigor. You are a budget - do your folks want to pay $360K+ for a poli sci degree?
There’s far more than a GPA.
And one can’t determine status based on a GPA. Some schools grade inflate and a top GPA is at the 30th percentile.
Others - a 3.8 might be top 10%.
You are trying to oversimplify.
You have to put yourself out there in totality - and see what schools fit.
Poli Sci can be studied most anywhere. My kid at Charleston - not even in the national rankings - has already interned for our state and for a top think tank in DC (during the fall semester).
You will have opportunities. What you do with them and how far they take you will be up to you.
Good luck
Yes. This upward trend can definitely help. If the school wants you, your current GPA will likely not exclude you. That being said, even students with perfect GPAs and perfect SAT scores sometimes get rejected from highly selective colleges. The school has to want you for other reasons, too.
How do you know your senior year grades?
But yes, grade progression (going up) is a very good thing.
Do you have a chance at schools depends on if you are talking weighted/unweighted and lots of other things:) Your SAT/ACT will also matter since you are talking about schools where it is required…
