How does Medill work?

Hi guys,

I am applying to Northwestern Early Decision. I’m really really excited and what not but in all honesty I’m kind of confused about Medill Journalism School.

I don’t really have any Journalism related ECs. In fact, the only thing geared towards writing in my resume is a Journalism class I took in 10th grade. I was in the IB program in high school so taking yearbook as a class was not really an option and my school had no high school newspaper. We did have a spring magazine called Graffiti in 10th grade (I had an essay published in it) but it was only around for a year because the teacher left.

Let me cut to the chase. I have no good Journalism ECs. Could I still be competitive for Medill Journalism School at Northwestern?

If not, can I double major in WCAS and Medill School of Journalism?

Thank you so much for your help!

Honestly, it’ll be tough to be accepted to Medill without journalism EC’s. I’m also pretty sure that you can’t choose a major in another school if you’re admitted to WCAS.

I’m a Journalism undergrad at another school, but am applying to Medill for grad school and from what I know about j-school (undergrad) having know journalism ECs in high school isn’t a big deal at all.

Even going into graduate j-school, it doesn’t really matter. They are looking for someone who has the potential and the drive. If you already had the ECs and the resume, you wouldn’t need j-school anyway.

Zlakhani1,

You can double major in journalism/liberal arts but only if your home school is Medill, not the other way around. NU is generally pretty flexible but there are a few exceptions and this is one of them.

ok, so this may just be me, but I’m wondering why medill doesn’t ask for any work samples? I understand that admission officers get a lot out of essays and recommendation letters, but don’t they want to make sure that a person does indeed know how to write a breaking news story?
