I’m planning on going to NYU for college and I know what I want t do, however I have no idea how I actually make it as a student in the Big Apple, if you will. I would prefer to live downtown and off of campus but I don’t know what type of job I could get or should get. I don’t mind having a roommate and would much rather go this route instead of having a studio. I want to move to NYC and I don’t mind having to rough it until I graduate and get a job but I just want to know how a student can work and still go to school and have a decent apartment with prices the way they are in NY. Also, what kind of job/pay would I have to have to do this? I’m really rather clueless and any and all help or advice would be grealty appreciated!

I hope to go to NYU one day. As for living in the city, it’s definitely different than living in a town. Get ready to walk A LOT! However, everything you could possivly want or need is all at your fingertips.

Get yourself an unlimited metro card. This will allow you to take the train virtually everywhere and get around the city.

The city is very expensive, however you can find some great places and restaurants that are much cheaper and offer quality products, food, and fun.

As for making money, it’s really up to you. I’m sure you can find a coffee shop, restaurant, or store to make a little cash. Most students usually work as cashiers or waiters, etc.

Are you open to the possibility of getting a co-op for living?

If you have any specific questions about NYU/living in NYC on a teeny tiny budget, let me know - I’m an NYU grad now living and working in the city
