My son copied 4 or 5 sentences for a rough draft but forgot to change it when he handed in the final paper. How will this affect future employment? Will many employers ask for college transcripts?

I don’t think plagiarism per se is noted on the transcript. If a student failed a class because of plagiarism, the F would be on the transcript, but not the reason. It only lists courses and credits attempted and achieved, and grades.

I think, in most cases, if plagiarism is caught and confirmed by professors and they confront the student and said student confesses (and it is their first offense), they’ll just fail that assignment.

In other cases, there will be a permanent mark on the transcript.

It would also depend on how strict the Prof and college policies are regarding plagiarism.

At schools with honor codes like UVA or Oberlin, plagiarism is considered an honor code violation which can result in penalties which could end up on the Dean’s report and/or transcript…including possible academic suspension/expulsion depending on the severity of the offense and past history of student concerned.

Is this offense noted on his transcript ? Order a copy & find out.

If your son applies to graduate or professional schools, many will ask for disclosure of the details. All state bar associations will require disclosure if applying to become a licensed attorney. Many US government jobs, as well.

At the State U where I used to teach, scholastic dishonesty did not appear on the transcript and was not reported to grad schools or employers unless that information was specifically requested. I’ve heard that some med schools routinely include such a request as part of their application materials, but I don’t know that for a fact. Maybe someone here does.

For law school they require a Dean’s certification, if there were any actions taken against student it would definitely come out in the Dean’s Cert. In addition , they ask you directly if you were ever on probation, dismissal,or had any actions taken that were academic/disciplinary in nature.
