How does retaking major classes in Economics affect grad school admission?

I am a student at one of the top 10 schools studying Economics. I’ve gotten a B and a B- in upper-level econ classes and would like to retake them. How would having these courses appear twice on the transcript affect admission to ph.D programs? (Let’s say I get A’s on both the second time around) Otherwise my GPA is about 3.8.

You can have the old grades expunged. They never happened.

Right, but the schools would know that I’ve taken the course twice for whatever reason. How does that reflect on my academic performance if I were to apply to top 10 schools?

I think Tortfeasor is trying to say that they won’t ever see those grades, as in there will be no record of you ever previously taking the class.

I didn’t know schools had the ability to expunge grades.

It depends on the registrar. Read the rules for re-taking classes. They’ll tell you whether the transcript will show that you’ve re-taken the class by listing it twice with their coresponding grade. Some places will just average. Other places will just take the highest.

Honestly, just take different upper level econ classes to show that you can do the work. But really for an undergrad with a strong GPA, you should be concentrating on focusing what you want to study for the PHD.
