How does the social life for freshmen branch out after the first few days?

What happens after the first few days on campus for freshman as they find their “right” social group? During the first few days before classes have even begun, I have found out I have nothing in common with my roommate or with people living near me. I am concerned that I might not find my right group, but still I know that many other people here feel the same way. I also am not a very social kind of person, so socializing in a new place is more difficult for me than many others? What will happen as we get used to our school and how do I find my “right” group?

I feel like every other thread in “college life” is about this subject. I’m gonna be at uni next month and I’ve been told that in the first few weeks everyone is very open to making new friendships because everyone is in the same position, not knowing anyone/having friends. So that’s when it’s supposedly easiest to make new friends. However, I’ve been told the catch is people “clique up” after the first few weeks, and are less inclined to talk to new people. I can’t tell you really any advice from experience, but I’d suggest just talking to as many people as possible. A lot of friendships stem from the most coincidental things. Just keep that in mind.

Join a club that interests you and I guarantee you will find people who share your interests.

When I was a freshman it kind of felt like everybody had found friends while I really hadn’t. I’m a totally open and nice person so I wasn’t worried or anything like that, but it was a little frustrating sometimes. Eventually I found my first best friend halfway through the year and then a lot more great friends after that once I got more involved. The main thing is, don’t get discouraged if you haven’t found a group of friends after a week. Some people get lucky in finding the right people and for others it takes a while longer. Just be open and friendly and you’re find your friends.

other friends, class, clubs, social gatherings, unless you are some really nasty, cruel, egotistical, completely antisocial person, you are going to make some friends
