How Does this SAT Essay Look?

Hey everyone,

I consider myself a good writer, but not under time constraints. I’ve been practicing a few prompts for the SAT, and was wondering what you guys would give me for a score on this one…by no means is it good, and I can pick out most of the bad items in it. Thanks for your help!

Can success be disastrous? Plan and write an essay…

“You have to have confidence in your ability and then be tough enough to follow through.” This quote, said by Rosalynn Carter, perfectly summarizes how to reach the road to success. The main argument, however, is whether reaching these achievements can sometimes lead to disaster. The stories of Abraham Lincoln and Michael Oher, however, prove that accomplishing goals brings positive outcomes.

Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, decided mid-way through the Civil War to declare emancipation of blacks as another reason for fighting the stubborn Confederates. This would, in effect, strengthen the Union army’s moral cause as well as in an increased number of Northern soldiers. This decision resulted in increased hardships to a stressed-out Lincoln, who was looked at with scorn by many white slave owners. The tall, skinny man persevered, however, and the treaty signed with Robert E. Lee brought the war to an end in a re-untied Union, where blacks were now legalized citizens. Had it not been for Lincoln’s success, America may have no longer been existent, let alone Africans been viewed as equals.

Michael Oher, football player for the Chicago Bears, is another sufficient example of the positives of reaching accomplishments. Oher, raised without a father in the slums of a run-down city, witnessed many daily events inappropriate for the eyes of a child. He was an only child, had slim friends, and spent most of his time contemplating his thoughts on the streets. Still, the husky child excelled in football and practiced often while maintaining decent grades in school. His perseverance led to a full scholarship at the University of Massachussetts, and eventually, a contract offer from the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. His success did nothing but fulfill the dreams that he set forth for himself.

Reaching success may be difficult, exhausting, and challenging, but never will it be disastrous. Without it, history would not be made, goals never accomplished, and dreams left unfulfilled. So, reach upon the midnight star, make a wish, and be content in following your journey.
