How does this SAT essay sound? How can I improve?

This is my first time trying an SAT essay, I am a highschool freshman preparing for the PSAT.

A colleague of the great scientist James Watson remarked that Watson was always “lounging around, arguing about problems instead of doing experiments.” He concluded that “There is more than one way of doing good science.” It was Watson’s form of idleness, the scientist went on to say, that allowed him to solve “the greatest of all biological problems: the discovery of the structure of DNA.” It is a point worth remembering in a society overly concerned with efficiency.

Assignment:
Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

People accomplish more when they are allowed to do things their way. Many famous inventors and scientists did not do come forth with world changing inventions and studies by doing things the same way as another person. Individuality caused these great inventors and scientists to change the world, not other peoples’ ways.

The great scientist James Watson was always “lounging around” and “arguing about problems instead of doing experiments.” However, James Watson concludes that “There is more than one way of doing good science.” His colleague went on to say that it was this very idleness that allowed him to solve one of the greatest of all biological problems. James Watson, a man who was always “lounging around”, used his own way of “doing good science” and changed the world forever. James Watson discovered the structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid, known to many as, DNA. This great scientist used his own way of science, not others’ ways, to change the world.

Steve Jobs, known to the world as the founder of Apple- a company now worth over $600 billion- was thought, by some, to be erratic, eccentric, and even crazy. If Steve Jobs was not erratic, eccentric, nor crazy, Apple products would not be considered “revolutionary.” The world would not have seen some of technology’s true potentials if we did not have these erratic, eccentric, and even crazy people. However, it is these very same people that society believes to be erratic that achieve something. It is these very same people that society calls erratic that change society itself.

The world would be nowhere be nowhere in the fields of science and technology without the help of individuals who refuse to follow someone else’s path and pave their own alternatively. In an artistic perspective, all art would look the same had we not had individuals who did things their own way. There are several examples of these individuals. Leonardo Da Vinci, a scientist, inventor, artist, and all around Renaissance man, was one of these brilliant individuals. He mastered the use of perspective in art, especially shown in the painting The Last Supper. Previously in works of art, all things were of the same size, so there was no distinction between what was near and what was far. Leonardo Da Vinci followed his own path and paved the way for new forms of art. Hundreds of centuries later, a man named Pablo Picasso painted beautiful works of art unlike any other. He utilized cubism in art. At the time, society was so accustomed to other forms of art; they did not appreciate Pablo’s art. Today, he is considered to be one of the most influential artists in the 20th century.
In conclusion, people do accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way. People following their own way, rather than following the way of others, allows for diversity and individuality, which ultimately leads to global progression in all fields, such as science, technology, and art.

I’m really not sure what I need to be working on and how this would score on a test, so anything would be a great help.

This was done in the 25 minute time period I was given on the College Board SAT practice website

Pretty good essay overall; I would rate about 7-9.

Your introduction is fairly clear and succinct. Good.

Your first body is not so good. An English SAT tutor once told me never to use the quote from the test. If you happen to agree with it, you could mention your agreement with the speaker in the conclusion, but not in a body paragraph.

Your second paragraph had a good general idea, but it was much too vague. You should mention a specific example of how Steve Jobs’ eccentricity made the Apple products possible. A neat addition would be the use of white in the ear phones.

Your third paragraph started off well but confused me, even though I can guess at what you were trying to say. You started with the example of Da Vinci, mentioned his innovation of perspective, but the went on to say how Picasso shocked the world. You need to clear up the confusion of how these two people are related.

Don’t use “in conclusion” in any short essay. It’s rather obvious you’re ending the essay, and it is meaningless. However, without it, your last paragraph wouldn’t flow well. Instead replace the first sentence with something like “These unique individuals have left a lasting legacy in today’s world, accomplishing innovative feats thanks to their nonconformity.”

Hope I helped. Good luck!

Thanks! I did this essay a while ago before I even looked at anything about SAT Prep!

Slightly off topic, but if you are preparing for the PSAT, there is no essay for that. The PSAT is only multiple choice.

Haha I know that now. Back when I wrote this thread I had no idea what I was talking about
