How does UC berkeley calculate the gpa of applicants?

From what I have heard, they convert your grades to As, Bs… etc. No signs are assigned and an A is considered 4.0. Is this true?

Yep. The entire UC system calculates your GPA like this. I think they also take some of your classes out and focus on the “core” of your education (english, math, science, etc). I’m not sure what their exact methodology with that is.

Actually, “they” don’t do anything. You do any required grade conversion and make the correct entries on your application.

Academic classes only, noted as “a-g” in UC speak. For example no PE, health, driver’s education. If you are instate, your HS will have a list of the a-g courses.

So does UC berkeley consider a 90 as 4.0?

Contact the UC system directly to ask how numeric grades as commonly used in NY and NJ should be converted to letter grades for the purpose of applying to UCs.

This is a few years old, but it might help: http://ieor.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/inline/GPA_Conversion_Chart2.pdf

this is a really useful tool to calculate your UC GPA
make sure to read the instructions carefully though

Hey kGeeeee. Well, based off this, I would have a 4.0 unweighted GPA. Won’t a bunch of people, based off this scale, have a 4.0 unweighted GPA?

@freighttrain Yeah, welcome to Berkeley: where everyone is perfect, but some are more perfect than others.

@freightrain: UCB also uses the capped weighted and fully weighted UC GPA which will be a better indicator for your chances.

The following stats are based on the capped weighted UC GPA so even with a competitive UC GPA, UCB is still not guaranteed and very dependent upon intended major.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:

UCB: 14%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 44%
UCSB: 54%
UCD: 58%
UCI: 65%
UCSC: 85%
UCR: 94%
UCM: 96%

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 4.20 or above:

UCB: 42%
UCLA: 54%
UCSD: 87%
UCSB: 85%
UCD: 91%
UCI: 94%
UCR/UCM: 98%

So how does Berkeley calculate the weighted GPA exactly?

Please tell me so I can calculate my GPA and see where I stand

Use the roger hub calculator. It will give you the UW UC GPA, capped weighted UC GPA and Fully weighted UC GPA.

Are you in-state CA? If not, then only AP/IB or DE courses taken in 10-11th grades are considered for the extra Honors points. Honor designated classes are not unless UC approved for in-state applicants.
