Hi, can anyone speak to how easy or difficult it is to transfer from the Business College to the School of Engineering or similar? Thanks!
Tagging @thumper1.
I don’t know how easy it is now…but in 2006 when my kid started at SCU, it was not hard to transfer into engineering IF you had the GPA and courses to do so. My kid applied undeclared arts and sciences, but she took the same courses her freshman year as the engineering majors, including introduction to engineering (or something like that). She did the same for sophomore year. Her advisor at the end of the first quarter sophomore year was the one who suggested she just switch to engineering…so the kid did.
Then at the beginning or middle of junior year, this same kid picked up a double major in biology.
(ETA…the bio major is in arts and sciences which has a foreign language requirement…engineering does not. This did pose a little problem, but the college worked with the kid to work it out)
I do not know how easy/hard it is to do the above now. But I’m sure if you contact the college, they will tell you.
Judging from the link posted above, it seems like you can still do this.
But I would advise taking the right courses freshman year so that the kid can actually fulfill the engineering requirements and graduate in four years.
@tsbna44 @DadOfJerseyGirl Thank you for your replies. Would love to hear from others with recent experience. I’m asking because some schools “officially” allow it or even welcome it, but in practice, it can be difficult to do.
Why not reach out to an engineering advisor at the school - and get the real answer.
A school has no reason to be dishonest with criteria and likelihood (i.e. is it automatic if you meet the criteria or not)?
I joined (and stayed) on several FB groups for accepted students when my elder DS applied. What actual parents post about their kids’ experiences vs what some colleges / universities promote is eye-opening. For this reason, I’m much more skeptical now that I’m actually a 2ndTimeThruMom!
It was actually @thumper1 who responded to your question
I merely tagged her.
If you go visit…maybe this will help.
And this:
Can I transfer into the School of Engineering once at Santa Clara University?
Yes, it is possible to transfer into the School of Engineering from the College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Business. Interested students are allowed to apply for transfer in the spring quarter of their first year by submitting an Internal Transfer Application to the School of Engineering. Applications are evaluated by the Faculty Chair of the department of interest based on space available (which changes from year to year) and the student’s academic performance in their prior quarters at Santa Clara University. With interest in several engineering departments on the rise, it is becoming increasingly difficult to gain approval for transfer into certain majors from outside of Engineering. It is impossible to forecast how many internal transfers a particular department will be able to accept for the upcoming year before the deposit deadline.
@thumper1 That’s very good info and OP has seen enough of - what is said doesn’t happen, etc.
OP - is this a 100% thing or an if I don’t like business ?
If you are sure you want to study engineering but applied and were accepted to business, speak to your admission counselor. Perhaps something can be done up front.
If not and you 100% want engineering, then you have risk by attending.
With a zillion fine engineering programs out there, why not find another and be assured - if an assurance is what you are seeking ?
Umm, looks like OP is the mom and is asking for her child of others’ personal experience with this possibility at SCU.
As noted in the link above, and from my kid’s actual experience…it was important that the kid transferring to engineering had taken the necessary courses, AND had gotten a sufficiently high GPA in those classes.
If your student starts in the Leavey school, and takes all courses related to a business major, I’m not sure they will be able to demonstrate that they are right for an engineering transfer.
BUT. The only way to clarify this all…is to ask.
Many, many, many kids want to keep their options open as college students, and colleges understand this.
I should add…my kid also had to petition to add her biology second major. But she had again taken the courses up to that point to make this a possibility. Except…foreign language because engineering didn’t require that.
Please, take the time to reach out to the college. We found people there to be amazingly helpful.
