How far down does the ED blacklist go?

I’ve heard that top universities circulate lists of ED applicants, so that if someone withdraws they won’t be accepted anywhere else. I was wondering how exactly this works: is it between every school that has an ED program? does it maybe only apply higher-tier schools?

Suppose I was accepted at Northwestern (I was) and I need to withdraw for financial reasons (it’s an unfortunate possibility). How far down the list would I have to go before another school would let me in? I know state schools are always an option, but are they the only option?

I’m praying I won’t need to use this information. I love NU. But it’s something I might need to know, if worst comes to worst… and besides, I’m curious…

Thanks for your time.

I don’t understand why you would apply if you did not know if you could pay for it. This is the sole reason people DON’T apply early decision. Now you’ve taken the spot of a deserving student who could’ve planned their financial situation better, and knew they could pay for it.

Umm… applying early with FA is fine (as long as the school permits it).

So you’re saying that the only “deserving student” would be rich snobs who could afford 50K a year? The only negative is that you won’t be able to compare FA packages with your early schools and your other schools. So the OP won’t be able to compare FA packages with NU and the other schools he’s going apply to.

The OP didn’t take the spot of anyone. It’s early, after all, so even if he/she withdarws, the spot would be opened up for RD.

As for actually answering the OP’s question, I don’t know. I heard Ivies and the next top 20 schools or something like that, but I really don’t know.

bnad: Northwestern claimed it would meet 100% of my need, and I believed it. Is that so bad? I applied early because I love the school. Northwestern says my EFC is about $10,000 more than we had hoped; we are appealing, but even if the aid stays the same, I plan to work my butt off applying for every scholarship in sight. Withdrawing is only a final, final resort, but I’d still like to know my options.

…Does anyone else know?

Anybody? 10char

Just plain work your butt off? And College loans. I mean, is it a reasonable amount to take up in debt?

You should beat up the people that fed you such BS information.

What Blacklist? I’ve been on CC for four years, and alive for five times longer than that and have never heard of such a thing.

Top schools do not have a “blacklist”, nor do they scheme who to admit amongst each other to improve yield, nor do they reject applicants who have been accepted EA to other schools.

Colleges have enough on their hands, and they rarely contact each other with private, sensitive personal information about applicants. Sometimes the paranoia about college conspiracies gets too much on CC. Should other colleges, especially those that commit to a “need blind” policy reject students based on a ED “blacklist”, your lawyers are going to have the best Christmas of their lives suing every institution you even glanced at. There IS NO Such THING!

I hope that makes you feel better. Do beat up the people that feed you rumors, and always second check your sources.
