How flexible can classes start times (time of day) be?

Usually, in large public universities, there are a lot of classes to choose from, so if I don’t want any morning classes, it’d be doable.

But what about Rice?

How much choice/flexibility do students (freshmen) have when it comes to scheduling classes (time of day)?

I’m also confused about this Prime Time thing. Are most classes within that Prime Time?

My daughter is at Rice for grad school after completing her undergrad there and I’ve never heard about “Prime Time”. I think the documents you are posting are written for faculy and are relate to assigning classrooms.

I’m not sure I agree that there is more flexibility at large universities. Yes, there may be more options, but there are also more students. No one wants the super early classes, but sometimes you have no choice because the later sections are full or conflict with other classes you want to take. And as you progress in your major your classes often become smaller and you might not have any choices regarding times. I went to a large public university and had many early morning classes, and not by choice.

In general classes at Rice do not start as early as they do at large universities. It’s very uncommon to have classes earlier than 9am. How much flexibility you’ll have will depend on your major and the classes you need to take. Some of the typical freshmen STEM classes may have several sections so more flexibility in regards to time but some classes might just be offered once or twice a week so you have less choice.

If you go to this website you can see the courses available and their times. You can change the “term” to be Fall Semester 2023 to see what was offered this last semester and the times. And also look at Spring Semester 2024 to see what is offered this coming semester
