How good/bad is Oral Robert University?

Hello Everyone,

It would be nice if anyone could put some info on this University. I am considering this for an BSE (Engineering) Degree and would love have your suggestions.

Thank you in advance. :)

OOPS: It is ORAL ROBERTS UNIVERSITY! Sorry.

Anyone???

Oral Roberts is a Christian school so I’m assuming your OK with the religious aspect of the school. To be honest, Oral Roberts does not have a very good reputation, even among the Christian community.

If your looking for a Christian school with top-notch academics and facilities, I would check out Wheaton in Illinois (“Harvard of Christian schools”). Our valedictorian chose it over schools like Vandy, Wake Forest and Washington and Lee.

Thank you Skater Girl. Yes I’m aware that it is a christian school, but I was looking at it as my safety. How about that?

Though I’ll surely get flamed by certain CC posters for sharing this opinion, I would maintain that ORU does not offer higher education. A caring community of faith? Sure. But outside its narrow segment of support, a degree from ORU will not be seen favorably by the vast majority of Americans.

Its vision statement says that “Oral Roberts University is a charismatic university, founded in the fires of evangelism and upon the unchanging precepts of the Bible.” When an institution predetermines that any understanding is “unchangeable,” they’re engaging in religious instruction, not true education. ORU says that its Biology program “integrates biblical faith with the study of the biological sciences providing an educationally and biblically sound perspective.” For an individual to allow biblical faith to inform their understanding of the world is a matter of personal belief. But for an institution that purports to be engaging in higher education to suggest that allowing their view of an “unchanging” Bible to weigh upon their students’ understanding of biological sciences is fraud. This is just one of the reasons that ORU is consistently found among the bottom of the list in most ratings of U.S. universities.

Here’s another:

“Scandal Brewing at Oral Roberts University”

"TULSA (AP) — Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts’ university, or else he would be “called home.” Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal.

Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors’ expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding non-academic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cellphones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

USA Today, Oct. 5, 2007

I don’t think Oral Roberts would be a good safety.

I think I remember that you’re an int’l looking for financial aid or scholarships? Would ORU offer you money?

What are your stats?

Thanks gadad. I’ll refrain from applying then.

Ah mom2collegekids, I secretly prayed that you’ll share some of your valuable thoughts in my thread, how grateful I am to Him.

Yes you are right I am looking for scholarships, and I had used the WES service to know that my grade point average is 94.35 (US equivalent 100 point scale). I don’t know how good or bad it is. I have improved my SAT score to a 1430 out of 1600 from a 1210 previously.
And Oral Roberts was one of the colleges who would have offered me a nice scholarship. Although I have already made a list of reaches and safeties, but I liked the campus of Oral Roberts, and thus decided to post it here before I apply (they waive the fee for online applicants). I would love to have your inputs on this.

ummmm??..

Congrats on raising your SAT! :)

Now that you have a 1430 M+CR SAT, how much would Oral Roberts offer you? What expenses would still be uncovered?

You might also find out how much LSU, Miss St, and UA-Huntsville would offer you. They would have better engineering programs and would likely give you a good scholarship.

When you were visiting ORU, did you happen to look at University of Tulsa? They give nice merit aid and are very “international friendly.”

Even in the Christian community, Oral Roberts isn’t exactly well-known as a highly academic school. I wouldn’t have my boys apply there, but I’m sure it’s the right fit for some, so if it fits you… go where you fit in.

Otherwise, if you want Christian and Engineering your choices are a bit more limited. Grove City in PA would be similar to ORU with higher academic standards and engineering. Calvin College in MI has engineering and isn’t far below Grove City in stats. People I know in TX like Le Tourneau for its Christian atmosphere and it has engineering I’m told. It’s also likely to provide good economic assistance and would likely be more favorably looked at than ORU. Dordt in IA might be similar (NO personal knowledge of that school - just hearsay).

Otherwise, secular schools are it and secular safeties in Engineering would likely be similar to those above for the actual Engineering - just minus the Christian part (in class - there are Christian groups on secular campuses). The top notch engineering schools aren’t really safeties IMO. Your stats should get you in many places, so pick some and see how the finances shape up.

How much merit aid do you need?

If your family can only pay - say $5k-10k per year - then many schools with half tuition scholarships still won’t be affordable.

There will be a stigma attached every time you mention your school. I have known people who went to Regent University who won’t say they went there. This is typical for the diploma mill type schools.

According to the Oral Roberts online scholarship calculator, you’d only get $8500 per year.

The COA for the school is… $28,000…so do you have the other $20,000 per year?

If so, then I think UA Huntsville would be a better choice for you. At a minimum, you’d get free tuition.

Mom2collegekids: I am applying to Mississippi State but not to LSU or UA HUntsville.
As I will not be giving the TOEFL (all of my selected universities have waived them), but UA HUnstville; they did not even reply to any of my queries asked about if the verbal in the SAT would suffice to prove my english proficiency.

This university was my first choice but they needed:

 1. My credentials evaluated by WES ( I asked them if i need to do this if i’m a freshman and not a transfer, but they did not respond)

A TOEFL: My native language is not English, but my PRIMARY language this is and I have been schooled in a Jesuit Christian missionary school for the entirety of my education. (They did not respond if they would waive this requirement by discretion)

They need the Financial Affidavit form with my application. (Again i asked them if this can be submitted later since this is used only for Immigration purpose. I have no source to show that I have a $24000 right now in the bank that too in liquid capital!)

[UAHuntsville | The University of Alabama in Huntsville](http://www.uah.edu/landing/prospective/internationalchecklist.php)

Thus I have already ruled this university out. If they reply soon (I doubt it), I still would have till June to be considered for the Presidential award.

See here’s a bit.
Have you received any education (secondary or university level) outside of the U.S.?
YES- You must submit certified academic records from each secondary or university institution that you have attended. All academic records must be sent in the original language with a certified English translation. In addition, academic records for education

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ received outside of the U.S. must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service.

Is English your native language- the language used in the home where you were raised, in the schools where you were educated AND in daily business?

YES- Where English is the primary language of the home, education/instruction, and daily

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ business students are NOT required to submit a TOEFL score.

Regarding your other question ma’am, I would need a full tuition to attend and few of my universities do give such merit awards to internationals.
Oral Roberts University has a full tuition merit aid… I think so.
Here is what ORAL ROBERTS UNIVERSITY said:
Scholarship Result:

On the other hand Mississippi State is warm, cooperative and I loved my assigned counselor who is so helpful and is assisting me to do all the paper works application. I am decided to enroll at Mississippi State if they give me a good merit aid.

@missyipe. No I have not visited Tulsa, I’m an international student. But I have been in tough with them and they do not have a full tuition aid for internationals.

THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP AND INFORMATION.

Further could I have some info on Jacksonville University Florida, Bellarmine University KY, and St. John’s University in New York.

Thanks before hand.:)

So what should I do? Should I at least apply to ORU or not?

That’s entirely up to you. Just know that it appears like their full tuition is a competition which you may, or may not, win. It doesn’t appear to be guaranteed unless I’m reading it incorrectly.

Grove City might not be a good choice as they don’t give much in merit aid. I don’t think Calvin has full tuition scholarships either. Have you contacted or considered the others I mentioned? If you’re going to try for merit aid, you might as well try more than one place and see what you get. Also, many colleges offer need based aid in addition to merit aid.

Hello Creekland, Nice to see your post here.

Yes it is not guaranteed, I’ll give the scholarship to a chance.

No, I have not considered the other two that you have mentioned, I’ll look into the two.

Since I’m an international student I don’t think that I’ll be given a need based aid until I file the FAFSA, which I’m not eligible for. I’ll see to the colleges that you mentioned, thanks.

True on the need based aid. I had forgotten the international aspect. It might help out with diversity grants at the smaller schools though. Try a few and see what is offered.
