How good does an upward trend look

Freshman year did okay with 3.1 unweighted and 3.25 weighted. With the work I’m putting in now I could get it to a 3.44 unweighted and above 3.6 weighted gpa. How will that look to Pitt?

I think an upward trend always looks good to any school, especially if it’s more than .1 or .2 points like yours. obviously a very high and constant GPA also looks good, but that’s not realistic for everyone. I think an upward trend looks good because it means that as you moved up in grades aka got harder and harder course work your grades actually improved. obviously that’s not the only thing they will look at in your application but even if it doesn’t help much it won’t do any harm

Upward trends are always good! Especially like chocolate5 said, when you’re getting better grades in harder classes, that always is a good thing for colleges to see. Regardless, you should always aim to bring your GPA up as high as possible.

So how would I fair If I continue my hard work and end up with a 3.44 uw and a 3.58 w gpa with my extracurriculars being Key Club 4 yrs, Hospital Volunteer, Track and Field 3 yrs, Tutor at local elementary school, John Hopkin Youth Search Award, and Football for 2 yrs. Also my senior year workload would be AP CHEM, AP CALC, Honor’s anatomy and physiology, with the rest of my classes being regular. I want to be Pre Med with Chem Major. How would I look with all this aside from taking the SAT which I will take later. Upward trend of about PLUS .33.

a 3.58 final W GPA is a bit on the low side, even with two APs. It seems that Pitt’s applicants are getting better and better every year, so if your SAT is a bit lower, you NEED a higher GPA (3.7+) to counter balance it.

Actually it will be probably end up 3.42 uw and 3.6 w at the least with the way I did my scheduling for next year. I haven’t taken the SAT’s yet. I’m an in state resident btw and my dad is an MD Doctor at one of Pitt’s Medical Center. I hear Pitt’s acceptance rate is 58% too, so I’m hoping I have a shot despite the slow start freshman year. What % chance you think I could have now with my credentials??? Then what % I could have with a SOLID SAT score???

Acceptance rate is pretty meaningless because it doesn’t take into account how strong the applicant pool is or what the yield rate is for the university.

You may want to take both the SATs and ACTs just to double down on your chances. Some people do better on one or the other, and Pitt superscores between both of them.

All you can do is do the best you can and apply and see what happens.

Also, even though your dad works at UPMC, that has no bearing on whether or not you will get into Pitt, FYI. Even students whose parents work at Pitt as faculty or staff are not guaranteed acceptance.

Thanks for the feedback guys I’ll apply when the time comes and test my luck.
