How good is Brown's history department?

Son accepted to Brown. Currently planning to study history/premed. Main decision is Brown vs USC (Trustee scholarship, 4 years full ride). Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Brown was my first choice this year and I applied as a history major. One of the best history departments in the country. They have world class history professors. Your son is very lucky

Brown’s history department is very good, but for a premed student, graduating with no loans is probably even more important. Can you afford Brown? USC is a great school, too, and a free ride is tough to beat.

If money is not a concern, that’s a different story. I can’t compare Brown to USC because I don’t know enough about USC (other than the weather is much better in LA than Providence). Do you have an specific questions?

The tuition isn’t really an issue, except for the fact that a 4 year free ride is also a large amount. Son was already set on going to brown until the USC trustee scholarship made us reconsider. The main question is really the med school placement rate plus the strength of the history department . Son will attend the admitted students day to help him finalize his decision. He has decided against attending Cornell

The med school placement rate at Brown is quite good (I’m pretty sure the stats are on the Brown website) – however, what’s also important to consider (at both Brown and USC) is what percentage of students who start out as premed finish as premed. The weeding out process can be intense. Organic chemistry is a killer.

I think it’s great that your son can go to ADOCH – that will really help him decide, and he can sit in on a history class, etc. However, don’t assume that just because your son likes history now means he’ll major in history. Students are notorious for changing their minds, and colleges like Brown offer such a wide-range of departments that many students end up in different majors, ones they never even heard of as high school students.

(FWIW, I took many history classes when I went to Brown, back in the dark ages, and have fond memories of many of those classes and my professors.)
