Michigan is #11
“A much-loved brewery, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, is located less than 20 minutes away in Dexter, but fortunately for Michigan students, they’ve got an Ann Arbor brewpub as well. Jolly Pumpkin is best known for their celebrated Belgian- and French-style beers, which also happen to be their most awarded: Oro De Calabaza has earned GABF gold, as well as Belipago. The brewery’s style is typically described as farmhouse, or rustic country, due to the brewery’s unfiltered and unpasteurized treatment. Michigan students and regular beer lovers alike are treated to the unique beers that Jolly Pumpkin puts out, including Bam Biere, La Roja, Luciernaga, and Calabaza Blanca.”

How good is this beer? Should I try it next time I come to Ann Arbor?

Can’t say anything about the Jolly Pumpkin brew, but in addition, most bars on campus have Bell’s Brewery beer on tap which is pretty good (#10 on the list).

JP is probably my favorite craft brewer in MI. Their staple, Bam Biere, is great. But my favorite is probably Noelle that they release during the winter months. Its pretty strong but gets very tasty as you drink more of it…

Also recommend Celis White and of course Bell’s

Having just been to the Jolly Pumpkin last night I feel the need to weigh in. First of all let me say that I like beer. I drink beer (not the crap most undergrads drink like miller lite, nattys, coors, bush, etc). I know what good beer tastes like and I know what crap beer tastes like. Jolly Pumpkin, in my opinion, is crap beer. They ALL taste sour. Now someone told me last night that they’re Belgian-style beers so they’re supposed to taste sour. Well, to them I say that I’ve had Belgian-style beer, Hoegaarden, it was damn good and it didn’t taste the least bit sour. Having said that, I certainly haven’t had a large number of Belgian-style brews so maybe Hoegaarden is the exception and not the rule. Bottom line, I wouldn’t recommend Jolly Pumpkin to anyone who actually likes drinking good beer.

I recently tried Bam Biere. I would have to say it’s a good slow, drinking beer and overall quite enjoyable. Definitely sour and tarty. I’d definitely order it again but not for some time.
