YMMV!
Except that lots of students who would get into Berkeley (L&S) would not get into HYPS or AWP, so the choice is not available to them. (Also, AWP might not be optimal for the OP’s list of possible majors.)
I don’t care what the average sticker price. Nobody I know in my immediate family would get any aid. We would be full pay sticker price at Berkeley or any UC and same with any private university. So the point is the average means nothing, only your financial situation is what matters.
Simba, this thread is about Berkeley, not the UCs in general. Berkeley admitted fewer out-of-state and international students than the other UCs, except Merced and Riverside. It also admitted about the same number of international and out-of-state as last year.
The article is not germane to this discussion.
UCBChemEGrad, look through the thread. Plenty of mention of the other UC’s.
I just want 1 answer to this question:
Is Berkeley prestigious as these top privates (ranging from Wake Forest all the way up to Harvard)?
There is no one answer to your question, since it depends on your major, career direction, and region.
(And don’t let an overriding focus on prestige lead you to choose a school that fits poorly.)
Probably in top 5-10 in your intended major(s).
@ucbalumnus But there has to be like an overall general view of the school, no?
With all afforded due respect, Wake Forest, for all its solid attributes, is not remotely on same plane as CAL, nor should it be even in the same conversation.
curiouscaleb - Hasn’t your question been answered? How much affirmation do you require? If you don’t think it’s “prestigious” enough for you, don’t apply.
@woogzmama No, because everyone is saying different things.
@boolaHI I don’t think so either, it was just an example of a lesser known private school that was just thrown in for comparison
Gotcha–point taken.
Everybody has their own opinion on most thing things. Do you expect a consensus?
I attended Harvard as an undergrad and Berkeley for graduate school. I think UC Berkeley is a fantastic school but if you’re planning to attend as an undergraduate you have to be focused and motivated in order to make the most of it. I was tucked away in the Graduate School of Journalism so didn’t have to contend with large classes, wait lists, etc. At the graduate level, UC Berkeley’s world class in terms of access to great mentors and exciting research opportunities–particularly for those in the sciences. The campus itself is well situated and the Bay Area offers access to a myriad of wonderful opportunities (indoor and out) that are hard to beat. I do know several current undergraduates who are loving their experience there–finding it diverse, challenging and yes, fun.
Ask several different people, get several different answers. And that applies to any school.
No matter how good you are, Berkeley is > 1% better than you are. The student is the limiting factor in the Berkeley Experience.
Berkeley has 27.5k undergraduate students. The other schools on your list have a small fraction of that.
Let me put it this way. Riding in Economy Class in an A380 will get you to your destination just as safely as riding in Business Class.
