How good should your social skills be in order to succeed?

Let’s say you were going into 1)Engineering 2)Finance 3)Law

How important are social skills in each of these, meaning, if you had better-than-average skills, how far could that take you? What are some limits (such as being mediocre at the job but really good at schmoozing)?

And also, what do you consider to be “better-than-average” people skills?

Read Death of a Salesman.

1) Engineering: my neighbor is a UCD graduate who makes about 100k a year. He has no experience in English because he came from a foreign Asian country. I guess social skills = w/e.
2) Finance: Sureee you might need social skills if you’re talking to coins and paper dollars.
3) Law: Remember silence is strong when used at the right time. No one wants a loquacious, bombastic lawyer.

Individuals who have better-than-average “people skills” know when to write a thank-you letter (FOR GOD SAKES MAN! DON’T LEAVE ME HANGING) and know how to give a good handshake. [add pressure to the palm, NOT THE FINGERS]
