I was wondering about how high my GPA would probably have to be in order to get into MIT. i go to [this school](http://marmion.org/academy.html) which is a highly respected college prep school. Last year I got around a 3.1 or so not including my theology grade (which i am not sure if they look at is as a core class or not?). I am in the top 1/3 of my class and was wondering what I would have to raise my GPA to in order to have a decent chance at getting into MIT. I am taking one honors class and one AP class this year and am hoping to “step it up” as far as grades go and was wondering what a good goal for myself would be. I am white, and both of my parents went to college(if that matters at all, i dont think it does though). Also, does MIT place much emphasis on your GPA freshman year?

ok thanks for the quick response and advice, are chances severely lowered if i cannot get within the top 10% of my class because my class is really smart… also, are you sure colleges like MIT don’t place much emphasis on freshman year because a friend told me that a lot of colleges like it count all years equally.

ok thanks, yea my math grade last year was best in class and i am taking AP bio and alg 2 honors so hopefully those go well. i have taken 2 practice SATs before when i was in middle school and should take another practice one this year so i think i will be well prepared for that. any more advice?

what does max honors and AP courses mean exactly? get A’s in all of them? also does anyone know of a site that says how much MIT considers freshman year?

I’m in the same boat as you, little GPA (3.2-3.3), low class rank (with 2.9 first semester it was 63/168, probably in 30% now), rising sophomore and “What the hell did I just do?” question in my eyes I actually came to CC to find out importance of GPA and found out next…
There’s no way to follow some specific path for MIT, for goodness’ sake, those guys accept one person out of eleven and that individual is URM or female However, don’t be afraid to touch ceilings – you might be able to find cure for cancer (someone on this forum actually did found cure for specific form of cancer) or prove String theory and that will bump your chances for MIT.

yea i have been looking more into it and found a lot of stuff that gives me hope in that if i can just bring my grades up this year and coming years that i will be well off. i am currently into web development and trying to get some projects of mine off the ground which if all goes as planned (what are the chances of that should definately help with college apps. do you know if MIT places equal value on your freshman year? if it looks at it but doesnt place an equal value on it then it could help in showing a positive trend correct?

I don’t think any college places much of a value on freshman year. However, there will be 9 more candidates who will have strong freshman year to compete with you.
