How hard are Duke Classes?

I’m sure this has been asked before, but I was curious to know how competitive within the classrooms, and how deep does the professor go in terms of course breadth in the sciences?

For instance, how hard would it be to maintain a high GPA (3.75+) during your 4 years at Duke majoring in Biology?

Also, are there any grade deflation/inflation problems at Duke?

To get “deans list” you have to be in the top 1/3 of the class. The cutoff is a 3.75. So about 1.3 of trinity gets that per semester.

Graduating cum laude, top 25%, is a 3.73
Magna, top 15% is a 3.816
Summa, top 5% is 3.921

Bio is definitely harder than a lot of other majors, but this should help a bit.
Consider 1300 or so kids in trinity, and you can figure raw number of kids

This is such a subjective question…I’m a bio major myself, and I can tell you that even between bio majors, people’s experiences are different depending on if they take the easiest classes, if they have a concentration, etc. There are really only 3 core courses for bio majors (Bio 101L, 102L, 26), and the other ones you take are up to you. For example, I took Bio 119 and 151L which are considered two of the hardest classes in bio, and I’m also concentrating for pharmacology, but a lot of students opt to take the easiest bio classes (and cheat themselves out of a complete bio education, in my opinion). My experience has been drastically different (and harder) than someone like that.

Not very, in some cases.
