And more importantly, how many are suggested/do you need to take? Do you need heavy preparation beforehand like you do for the SAT I? What is the level of difficulty on these tests and how high do you need to score?

I took literature and U.S History.

I’ve never taken a literature class but I got a 620 on it and I got a 570 on us history even though I took the ap and got a 3 on it. The u.s. history one was crap, don’t take it.

If you’re applying to tech schools then make sure you do math 2 (Math 1 isn’t nearly as highly regarded as math 2) and something in the sciences. If you’re applying to something like an ivy then I’d recommend taking whatever you think your 2 best are because they don’t care which two they are.

As for the score the 50th percentile is around 550-600 on these tests. But keep in mind that the percentiles are a bit skewed since only the kids who are applying to higher tier colleges are even taking them anyways. I’d aim for 650+, 700+ if you’re applying to ivies or caltech or mit. Good luck

^Do you need rigorous preparation beforehand like you need for the SAT I’s? Like spend a whole summer, prep class sorta deal.

I read one practice book (Barrons) for each subject test I took, and did all the problems. I scored very well on both. 2 Months preparation.

Depends. Taking an AP science class, then taking the respective subject test almost ensures success on the test.

plan for success: 1. take the corresponding AP class. 2. read through a prep book (Barrons, Kaplan, etc.). 3. take a couple real (as in official collegeboard) practice tests.

If you do those 3 things, then you should have no problem scoring high on subject tests. Doing this, I got 800 Math2, 780 Bio., and 770 US History.

As for the number to take, most schools, except for the rare exception only require two, so you only really need to take two. It is helpful, though, to send in 3. Some schools recommend sending in 3, and it can only really help your chances.

Good luck!
