1.) The difficulty about applying to medical school as an international student is that you do not have a “home state”. Many schools, both public and private, demonstrate a home state advantage. Since you do not have one of these, you are at a disadvantage.

At schools which do not demonstrate a preference, however, you stand as good a chance as anyone – presuming that you are better-than-fluent in English. If that’s not the case, then essays, interviews, and the MCAT will all pose major obstacles.

2.) Medical schools on the whole do not accept credit from international universities. But if you’re at JHU, this shouldn’t matter.

3.) It’s always competitive. Is there a particular standard you’re interested in comparing it to?

From my trusty MSAR:

Harvard Med: 290 international apps, 16 interviews
Weill (Cornell) Med: 221 international apps, 11 interviews
Columbia Med: 266 international apps 44 interviews
Stanford Med: 216 international apps 17 interviews

So it doesn’t seem impossible to get interviews but appears to be a bit tougher than for US applicants. The Columbia interview rate is actually very high.
