How hard is it getting a scholarship??

I am a junior in hs. I am only really looking at one college, UW-Seattle, because of our finances (in-state). In the best case scenario, I get some kind of financial aid because $20k a year is probably still pushing it. Only my dad works and he’s retiring this year, making our income at like $50k.

Find the “net price calculator” on the college website and put the numbers in. See what it says. Look at what grants if any you might qualify for from the state, pell grant (federal) and maybe need based grants from the school.
Look also at other schools close by that might work for you.

Some schools also give scholarships for academic merit.

Try to get the best grades and test scores junior and senior year. Study for the SAT or ACT.

Are you taking the PSAT in a few days? If you think are capable of scoring very well, do some prep though there isn’t much time left.

@mommdc I’ve been trying. Currently ranked 19/463 in my class. Also, are those grants you need to pay back or no?

@annoyingdad Yes I am. I did do some SAT prep, nothing specifically for the PSAT, though I will go through the practice packet I received.

I’m not familiar with Washington state grants, but the link above has some info.
Make sure to read the FAQ and info provided and file your FASFA as early as possible.

You seem to do very well on your class rank. You might qualify for scholarships from UW and other schools.

Thanks for the link, that helped!

UW is a great school, but you really need to look at more than one. In fact almost everybody should apply to at least 5 colleges, and this is doubly true when finances are tight.

So, consider Washington State and Evergreen State too.

Is there a good college close to where you live, so that you could stay at home to save money on room and board?

Definitely apply to at least a couple of private colleges. You will be surprised at how much money some of them give away. Often, it costs less to attend a private college than a state school. So, look at Seattle University, and Whitman College, University of Puget Sound. Down in Oregon, take a look at Willamette University plus Lewis and Clark.

Getting too focused on one college is among the worst mistakes you can make. If it rejects you or you cannot afford it, then you are totally out of luck.

What will you and your parents be able to pay towards your college? That is an important part of the affordablility issue. UW still costs something, and if you are not commuting, room, board and other living expenses can add up to quite a bit. Run some NPCs and look for state schools to which you can commute as well as UW.
