how hard is it to get off wait list for PCC and SMC?

okay so I am in the wait list for Polsc 1 honors at smc. So in order for me to get the class I need people to drop it obviously. Do a lot of people forget to pay the fee for the class on august 1st? Will I have a good chance of getting it then?

And for PCC my registration date is in two days and I’m trying to get classes in econ 1a and stat 50 class. On the lancer account, it says that there is an opening but does that mean there is an opening in the wait list or an actual space in the class? and do a lot of people forget to pay for the class by the deadline which will potentially get me a spot in the class?

Thanks guys!

I don’t go to either of these schools, I go to Orange Coast College, but I’m sure my experiences will parallel with yours as OCC has a wait list as well. It really depends where you’re placed on the wait list. Typically if you’re in the top 1 through 6 people on the wait list you might have a shot to get in. You’ll always have people not show up for the first day of class and their spot will be reserved for those who are first on the wait list.

As for your PCC question. It should have a maximum seat number and the number of people who have enrolled. Let’s say a class has a 40 student maximum and 40 students have enrolled. That class is full, however you should go ahead register for the class anyway so you get on the wait list (unless there’s like 20 people ahead of you because you won’t get the class anyway). A class will be labeled as “closed” when the max number of students have enrolled and the max number of students have signed up on the wait list.

thanks for the reply! and for Smc im pretty sure the wait list is a free for all once you get it but im not really sure.

And I know this sounds mean but hopefully people dont pay by the deadline on August first so i can take their classes ;)!

Hi! I’m a PCC student who had no trouble getting the classes I want. I was on the waitlist for STATS 50 class and I was 8th on the waitlist and turns out I was 5th on the waitlist by the first day of class. They usually add AT LEAST 5 people from the waitlist and A LOT of people dont show up on the first day of class. I don’t know what you mean by “there is an opening on the Lancer site”. What you should do is stalk the PCC system. I had a really late registration date and I literally refreshed the schedule page every 2 minutes and got the classes I need!

Hey thanks acoustickitty123! Well that makes me feel better lol. Oh and when I said lancer account, I just meant the class lookup service thing. So do you think it would be art to just get in the wait list instead of filling up that slot with a meaningless class? And are you part of the scholars program? :)

You’re welcome yomaxe  I know, it’s so stressful! For the class lookup, lets say you put “Poli Sci 1” does it say something like “2 OPEN” or something like that? Some classes it will definitely be hard to get off from the waitlist list to the actual class because I know that schools are cutting significant amount of space. My music class had about 80 chairs and would only take 35 students and those on the waitlist weren’t accepted. I you plan on waitlisting for a stats class, make sure you aren’t the 8th or 10th on it because it’s a big risk. If you don’t get the class you won’t have another class to fall back on. I was not a part of the scholars program :-)

Yes it does say like 2 open. That most definitely means that there is two spots on the waiting list, correct? Also, do you know the date when you have to pay for classes? Thanks!

Anytime!!! Actually, on the LancerLink, I don’t remember it ever showing waitlist. EVER. So I’m positive that means there are only 2 open seats and waitlist hasn’t began yet. For paying classes…I never paid because I had BOG and Financial Aid. Im positive they tell you that once you register for classes. Maybe you’ll have to pay your fees in a week or less or you’ll be dropped from your classes. I’d love to answer more questions! Let me know :-)

Ok that’s good news then! Hopefully that means there is hope to actually get in the class and not the wait list. And also does pcc use a wait list or wait pool. The pool means there is now designated number which is cool. Thank you so much. Yo have been a lot of help!!!

PCC uses a wait pool. I believe there is a maximum of 25 open waitlist spots. So happy I could help you! Even if you don’t get in on the waitlist, try that refresh tactic. i got so many classes by doing that haha. Also, I think for PCC you can waitlist for a lot of classes and still keep that one meaningless class as a backup as long as you don’t exceed the maximum number of units. I know that if you’re waitlisted for a class, it does show up as “3 units” out of 16". It shows up as 0 units because you haven’t officially been enrolled in the course. Hope that’s not confusing lol

Oh not confusing at all! And you have helped so much! Thank you and you have answered all my questions. Good luck with school :)!

You’re welcome! thanks and good luck to you too!! :-)

If you have to have Stats like I did (Stats being the one class that would make or break my now succesful transfer to UCLA), show up to DR.OBERLANDER’s 7am class and add. That’s what I did and I wasnt even one of the people on the waitlist of 20 for any of the 3 classes he had. (I was actually #8 on Ms.Facussah’s waitlist) The way he does it is if you show up to that first class you can put ur name on the waitlist and dont have to show up again at 8:20 and 9:40 and you have priority over the ppl that sign their names afterwards. Another added bonus is that he gives priority to ppl that are in their last semester at PCC. Trust me, A LOT of ppl drop the class b/c 7am is too early and b/c stats can be challenging, but if you stick with it you will at least get a C in the class b/c on his grading scale 5pts is a D which is basically what you would get if you do 90 percent on all of the homework. 15 pts earns you a C. 25=B. 35=A. you have 9 test grades worth 4pts each(he grades on the GPA scale) plus the homework grade which is equal to 1 additional test grade.
