How hard is it...?

How hard is it to get into schools like Tufts and Vassar? Can you also comment on the schools in California, like UCLA and USC?

Look at their websites under “admissions.” They should give you statistics on how many kids applied last year, how many were accepted and rejected. More importantly they should also give you stats about their accepted and enrolled students, such as class rank, SAT scores, etc.

To look up virtually any college online, just assume their website is the college’s name followed by .edu . 90% of the time it’s correct. Then navigate to their admissions or “prospective students” pages.

Checking out an individual school’s acceptance rate will give you an idea how hard it is to get into it.

You can use online sites such as Peterson’s, which gives info re median SAT scores, acceptance rates, etc.

[College Search – Find Your Colleges and Universities with Petersons](http://www.petersons.com/ugchannel/code/searches/srchCrit1.asp?path=ug.fas.college)

For example, Tufts has a 27% acceptance rate. That makes it tough in my book.

USC 25%. Vassar 30%. UCLA, tough…even tougher if you are out of state.

Of course, make sure to combine acceptance rate with median “stats” (test scores, GPA…not a flawless measure, but an easy one to find). It’s important to note that even though 1/4+ of Tufts applicants are admitted, that’s not 1/4+ of average high school grads. It’s a tough pool to begin with.

Most schools will have admissions data on their websites. If schoolname.edu doesn’t work, just google the school name…the official webpage should be the first (or very near the first) hit. Look through the Admissions or Prospective Student sections of the page.

You can also browse CC, or even do a search in “Chance” threads to get a more personalized (if rarely optimistic) feel. Take this approach with a large dose of salt.
