After reading many posts by CC’ers, I was wondering exactly how harsh do the graders grade the essays? Do they actually read the entire essay or grade the essay based on the thesis and maybe the 2nd paragraph?

bump – I want to find out too (=

My teacher says that the intro is very important. Afterwards, the readers just scan through your essay looking for specific terms that you included.

I was wondering if the graders would actually count the number of documents you referred to in the DBQ?

What did other students’ teachers say about the essays?

okay my teacher is one of the graders and he says:

a.) he is 99.9 percent positive he can tell how well the essay will be from the intro HOWEVER, he reads (like all readers) the ENTIRE essay so you can definitely redeem yourself

b.) there are many different standards for number of docs, he says atleast one more than half, but i mean if you elude to atleast half and use them CORRECTlY, you should be fine…dont force them into the essay as it doesnt count if they are used completely wrong.

c.) use outside information, for the one about the New Deal a few years ago, things like spelling out the WPA and TVA earned mega kudos.

Well i hope they’re not gonna judge you that harsh because tehy probably know you’re timed. but that doesn’t mean you should write a crappy essay. specifics earn you the 7s and 8s and 9s though. but yeah i only used 8out of 12 documents this year (for euro), so definately don’t force them in.

hmm… my teacher never really said what kind of intro she wanted, so all i did was go " During the course of … bla blah " for one sentence, then slap in my thesis. hope that’s okay with the graders!! does only one person grade , or two??

well all the teachers get trained on the dbq, but only one person grades it…then all the 4 frq choics are divided up so that they each grade one of those ones…potentially you could have the same person grading two of them, or three compeltely different people for each essay.

How much importance do they place on outside information for the DBQ?

Outside Information is CRITICAL. without it, you can’t expect a good score.

Unfortunately, I barely used outside information- most of it was in the documents… :'(
