So at the beginning of this school year, I was in Psychology. I thought the class would be fascinating and expand my understanding of myself and others. I was wrong. It was literally the worst class I have ever taken in my life. We watched “What About Bob?” as a legitimate teaching method. We put on skits to show why it’s not okay to stereotype. It was physically painful going to that class.

So about two months into school, I decided to try switching into the other class I was considering when signing up for classes, Theory of Knowledge. However, the counselors had determined that even thought a ton of students wanted to change their classes, they weren’t going to let anyone. Long story short, I talked to the Theory of Knowledge teacher and got his consent (which wasn’t enough, apparently), had my mom email my counselor, and eventually had to call the principal. After about 2 weeks of this I had finally given up hope, but then in French someone brought a transcript which had me in Theory of Knowledge 7th period!

Does anyone else have a similar story? Or does anyone else want to share how bureaucratic their school is in general?

My school refused to let me drop my lit class for a language class because my grades were “too good”. What a fcking joke. Then, finally after a few months and a series of talks between my parents and the school, the school grudgingly and reluctantly allowed me to change classes. My new class is exactly what I was looking for.

I must say, though… I take TOK and it’s the biggest joke ever. Probably won’t be much better than your psych class… sorry.

“What about Bob?” is a legit teaching method.

Schedule changes aren’t supposed to be requested until the end of the first week, when a form is available to be filed, processed, and forgotten. I’ve always just asked my counselor the first day and gotten things fixed immediately.

@unenlightened, I’ve been in ToK for a few months now, and while it is quite a joke of a class, it is by far better than my psych class was. I saw another kid huffing some substance (not sure what) during class and told the teacher. She just blew it off.

At least ToK has the IB candidates and students who can handle writing a coherent essay every once in a while. And I am actually learning quite a bit in ToK. Not necessarily the material but I can construct an argument much better than before. Unless you were in that psych class, you have no idea how terrible it was… I have never taken a more remedial class in my life.

@noimagination: I can’t tell if you’re joking, but even if the movie was a viable teaching method, we didn’t discuss it at all. She just put it in and we watched it for a week, then we moved on to something new. God… I hated that class.

At the beginning of the year, I was scheduled to have the difficult Senior English teacher. (difficult as in the one that made you read and write essays whereas the other one let you watch the movie version and gave no homework). I had looked forward to English with the easy teacher since freshman year, and especially after my best friend had her as a teacher the year before and he told me of all the fun activities they did in class and how easy it was. So when I got my schedule, I was crushed, especially since the easy teacher was the only one that taught English last year and I was unaware of the possibility of not having her as a teacher. Third day into school, I request to be changed into AP Stats instead of AP Calc AB in hopes of getting it changed (big luck chances involved here). My guidance counselor and I discussed this and she had told me I was going to take English with the hard teacher just in a different period and that she would okay it with the principal first. When she came to me later in the day, she said my change from AP Stats to AP Calc was approved and to go to the secretary and have her change my schedule to reflect AP Stats and the hard teacher in a different period. Well, the secretary ended up asking me what teacher I wanted, of course I told her the easy one, and she scheduled me for it. I’d be dying this year in coursework if I had my previous schedule. My cunning scheme was the best decision I’ve made all year. :)
