How heavily does BU weight subjective factors in admissions?

I think that I have the stats to get admitted to Boston U: 690 CR, 760 M, 770 W (1450/2220), 3.75/4.16 GPA (7 AP courses, 12 honors courses) - all my B’s and my one C are above 91% and above 83% respectively, 720 Math I, 710 US History.

However, I’m not sure if my subjective factors are top notch…For my EC’s, I have MUN with some leadership position, Econ Club - Co-President, Student Government - Speaker of Freshmen Class, Tech Student Association, FBLA, Volunteer for 2008 Presidential Campaign, Basketball Ref, Rec Soccer/Basketball, School Newspaper, School Arts Magazine, I help run my school’s shop throughout the year during lunch, 200 hours of community service, and I attached a research abstract, but the problem is how I presented them…For some of them I just wrote the activity and nothing else because, when I submitted the BU application, I really didn’t know any better. For example, I just wrote that I was Speaker of the Freshmen Class and that I was in Student Government - no additional description…

As well, my How did You Hear About BU essay is horrible, my Common App essay is way too abstract, and I used motivated as one of my three words (cliche >_>). My recs are okay - I know that one is pretty detailed and she said that I was in the top 5% of students she’s ever had but I never saw the other one - though I turned that ‘other’ one into UMich and Wash U and got accepted and waitlisted, respectively, so that one must not be that bad.

I don’t know if these negative factors are going to be enough to kill my application…what do you guys think? Do my (relatively) strong objective factors outweigh my (relatively) weak subjective factors?

And, by the way, I just got deferred and then rejected by UChicago with the same exact application, so my confidence is kind of shaken at the moment…So, yea, sorry in advance if this thread comes across as being unnecessary, I’m just rather nervous.

EDIT: Wow…I meant weigh and not weight in the title, sorry :/.

You’ve got nothing to worry about

^that

calm down bro.

Alright. Thanks guys.

Yeah, they are definitely going to look highly upon the fact that you completed those activities, rather than look down on the fact you failed to provide an explanation. Years of experience versus wording on your application? Don’t let your bad experience with UChicago get you down - Every school is different  I am sure you have nothing to worry about!

Hmm…does anyone know if I’ll have a chance at getting the University Scholarship? I just looked at the average statistics for it and my SAT is above the average by 100 points and my GPA is slightly lower than it (though, I think at least, that’s counteracted by my demanding schedule, dunno though). Any opinions would be lovely.

really, where are u looking? u have more than enough leadership in your ecs…

No clue about the scholarship but 91% for a B and 83% for a C???
That is HARSH!!!

Tell me about it…Do you think that they’ll consider that when reviewing my transcript? My guidance counselor claims that they do, but he doesn’t really know that much. I mean, if my school used a 90-100 as an A scale, I’d only have one B throughout my HS career (the 83%)…

What?

With the stats mentioned, im pretty sure you’re getting in

“really, where are u looking?
What?”

lol, that was sarcasm. i guess that gets lost over the internet, though. my B. i meant that your stats/ecs are great, & that u shouldn’t have any doubt.

Chicago’s app pool is very different from Boston’s. I wouldn’t take a rejection from Chicago that harshly, because they are very different schools looking for very different things.

I wouldn’t worry about the missing activity descriptions. That should be pretty minimal. The only thing I would doubt for a second about your application is the grading scale at your school. If your school sent in a school profile, then you should be fine. Most schools send in a profile, so I really wouldn’t worry.

You have a great app! Don’t let Chicago get you down. That was a weird year at Chicago, and BU isn’t having a weird year, so you should be fine. In fact, you should be AMAZING!

Good luck!
