How High can I Fly?

sorry for the stupid title but I never get views. anyways

I am a white male junior from Texas and growing up I always thought I was going to attend Texas State, but in the past couple months I began to realize I could maybe go to a little bit more respected school than that. But since I never really considered myself a good student I didn’t look into colleges before now, so I was hoping you guys could set me up with a few safeties, matches and reaches for a geology major.

----GPA- 3.83 W, probably ~3.6 UW(low rigor; only one or 2 APs per year) currently ranked 149 out of 613(barely top quarter, ouch) will raise it senior year though with 2 or 3 more APs

----SAT- 2190

----EC’s- pretty weak: 4 year basketball(2 year letter), 4 year cross country(1 year letter) at a 5A school with 2600+ students, National Merit Qualifier(waiting to see if it is commended scholar or semifinalist, probably just commended) NHS, maybe 60+ hrs community service, worked on and off for 2 years at baskin robbins and refereed youth basketball, aau basketball every summer … sadly i think thats it

A&M is a safety because I have automatic acceptance for my SAT and class rank

you can get into some pretty good schools with that SAT and GPA. What kind of school are you looking for? What regions of the country? Big or small? Urban or suburban? Party schools? Liberal or conservative? etc etc…

^Emily’s right. See if you can bring up your GPA a little and look into schools nationwide that have strong programs that appeal to you. Ask your counselor to lend you a book called Ruggs Recommendations on the Colleges or whatever he has that’s similar. Check out schools that have what you want and how your application would look in their probable applicant pool. If yours would be above-average, or even on the high end of average, then you might want to keep them on your working list…which will get shortened as you learn more about them.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Well, right now I am trying to figure out what level of colleges I can get into more than specific schools. Like what caliber universities do I have a shot in? I know not ivies, but thats about all i know

what level schools should i be looking at?

You have a definite shot at some top 50 schools

I would say you have a fair shot anywhere except Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT. If you get your GPA up to 3.7+ UW you should be set

I highly doubt the ^above post but any other opinions on schools in my league?

maybe Rice

How far are you willing to travel?

Im willing to travel basically anywhere, that is not a constraint. But what makes you say I may be able to get into rice? and what can i do to make sure it is not a waste of an application?

If you have a 1400 SAT CR+math, that puts you in the mid-range for Rice.

Ya but do they weigh SAT very heavily?

Just look through the average SAT and GPA scores for different schools that you might be interested in. If you are somewhere around the average, it’s not a waste of application.
