how I raised CR-some tips

So I just got my scores back and did pretty good on cr (770) and thought I would share some advice for the section. Just as a reference I got a 710 in math and a 700 in writing so im obviously still working on those

I started out with a 480 in reading on my psat in sophomore year and after alot of practice have managed to raise it 290 points. The reason I write these tips is because I know the frustration of going through many tests and having your cr stay the same. some general tips

-Get direct hits volume 1 and 2. This book will have almost every if not every word you need to know.

-Do practice tests-I did about 65 practice tests for this score.

-review your mistakes and rationalize why the correct answer is the correct answer.

-when reviewing the answer choices for cr try to find the subtle difference between similar answers. For instance I remember doing a cr where the author said he liked to get lost and he gave an example of some mountain where he skis. The question asked what does the mountain represent or something like that. The two answer choices were-it was a desolate place or a was it a place that the author liked to get lost. The answer was the latter as the passage never mentioned the place to be desolate but you would associate the mountain with the words desolate and isolated because mountains are inherently just that. Thus find the subtle diffrences supported by the passage.

-try lsat cr as it is harder and similar. I learned how to think better for cr with the lsat questions and passages.I found the lsat allowed me to learn how to find the subtle differences that are crucial for cr.

-Also try to read the questions first and then underline in the passage but dont read all the questions at once. go one by one. For instance if the questions says in lines 20-21 blah blah blah then underline those lines and read up to that point with careful analyses of those lines. If your struggling for time then this will most certainly help you. At the end of the passage answer the main theme questions. This saves time because you can read the passage once and answer the questions rather than read the passage then look at the questions and then reread the passage which wastes time. This might not work for everyone but it helped me.

The final and most important tip is to not give up on cr. Cr takes the longest to improve and is in my opinion the hardest section. If I can go from below 500 in cr to a 770 then anyone can. I am by no means an expert on cr but just some things that worked for me.

I know analyzing math and writing questions can definitly help you improve because of it being so analytical and systematic with laws and rules.
But does analyzing your writing answers really help you that much?

thanks. i am so frustrated… got a 500on this sat (may) but didnt study

It defiantly does I went up also 220 points in writing but I’m at a 700 so in no place to give tips lol

spuding, sorry I meant does it really help you in CR not in writing, i know it hellps in writing :).

oh, where were you before! I definitely think that lsat cr would help.

Great tips spuding! Can I ask how long it took for you to raise that score? Will one summer do it?

Thanks for the tips! CR is my worst section for sure, and this really helped.

It took me about a year. For most of the year however I was trying to break a 700 which was definitely the hardest part. I believe anyone can get to the high 600 range with a few months of steady practice (10-20 tests) which shouldnt be too much for one summer as long as your doing a few sections a day.

Wow. Thanks for this!

Thanks for ur advice dude, I used just essential 500 for vocab and cr(it had a little cr tips in the back REALLY HELPFUL) and got a 800 on in cr but my writing is lacking so anyone recommend any good practice tests?

Kaplan is where it’s at (I got a 2380 after a summer course - 1st time taking SAT !)

Great guide! Thanks :)

By 65 practice tests you mean strictly cr sections right? Hopefully…

Can you name the source of your practice tests? I doubt it was just college board.

medicalboy: use google wisely and you will find what you are looking for.

No 65 tests including all sections. and what thenaga said

Anyone want to pm me to let me in on this insider secret?^

^ Same o.o

you can get many psats from amazon and these forums
