can i do well by reading the book + lectures and labs? i might have to skip lectures for cs61b next fall

Considering the content of the course, you should be able to do fine, but just remember, as with any course, the lectures are there and are an excellent way to learn the material. You might face difficulties or have a harder time with other methods.

Whatever you plan to do, do not plan on missing lectures on a regular basis!

^ i mean not being able to make lecture at all because i have another commitment (can only show up on midterms)

They’re not important. You’ll do fine if you do the labs and projects.

Well, if it’s anything like 61a, you can just rely on the webcasted lectures if you don’t get the material from labs alone… However, I’ve heard that Hilfinger (who is teaching 61b next fall) is absolutely terrifying, so lectures might be important for his class… Might want to ask someone who has taken Hilfinger specifically.

what a shame, shewchuck, an excellent teacher, is giving the lectures during fall 2011.

You don’t need to go to lectures, but if you did want to, you can watch the webcasts online from past years that would probably be around the same.

If you have another commitment, is it possible for you to take 61B at another time?

It’s one thing to plan to attend all the lectures and miss a few, but if you plan to attend none, unexpected things can cause your performance in that class to really go awry.
