Hi! I’m a senior in HS, and I’m hoping to move on to a NY State University center next year. I want to major in computer science, as programming and web design have been my passions all my life.

I have a ~3.3 (88) GPA as of now.
My SAT scores are: 600R / 650M / 630W with 8 essay. (1880 total)
I’ve taken 3 college courses and 2 AP classes in my junior year. I’m taking 3 more APs now.

I feel that my stats give me a decent shot at NY state universities, however my extracurriculars are kind of lacking:
-International Key Club - member as of junior year.
-Math honor society - member as of senior year.
-I played in 2 Intermediate Guitar concerts at my HS during my junior year.
-During my spare time, I teach myself various programming languages (BASIC/ HTML/Javascript)

I can’t think of any other major EC’s that would be worth including. I love to travel, and have gone overseas to Ireland to meet some distant relatives, but I don’t think that would tie into my interests (computer science).

Would these EC’s give me a decent shot for state universities such as Stony and Buffalo? If not, are they very important factors, or will they mostly be looking at my stats/grades?

Thank you!

Have you applied yet? One of the best things you can do is APPLY EARLY! Yes, your grades and test scores are probably the most important factor for both, but not the only factor. Don’t know about SB, but Buffalo will consider everything. It sounds as if your weighted gpa is probably higher than what you’ve stated, so that will help too. Your SAT’s are in the mid-range for UB, so no problem there. Keep your grades up and good luck!

Here’s a tip:

SUNY’s place extra emphasis on SAT scores. I was rejected from U of Albany. When I spoke to an admissions counselor from their, they told me it was because of my SAT scores.

I took the SAT’s twice, with an 1880 total (1250 M+R). I can still apply for the December one. Would it be worth it, even if there is a pretty high chance that I won’t improve? Do SUNYs hold it against you if you take it more than two times?

Sorry for going off topic, but if you don’t mind could you please tell me what your SAT scores were? Thanks :)

I don’t see how taking it again could hurt but I can’t tell you if the score you have now is good or not. Admissions is strange if you know what I mean. You may or may not get into one of the SUNY’s with them.

Am sorry, I don’t remember my SAT scores because I took it a couple of years ago.
