Son doesnt have alot of EC’s maye 2 or 3. He wants to go to a LAC or State School like U of Illinois, Denison, U of Wiscosnin-Madison, Kenyon, Valp…his gpa is 5.09/5 W…how important do you think eC are in these type of schools? Could he get in with a 30 on the Act?

Well, how long has he been involved in those extracurriculars? How often does he do them?

I think he should have more but I think involvement beats out pure numbers any day. It’s better that he has a few that he’s involved in versus twenties that are just for show.

Plus, he may have trouble with Kenyon and Denison with those ECs.

ECs are rather important because it seperates the one sided people with well rounded people. I personally think its better to do good at a couple of things than do amazing at one thing and crap at others. Just tell him to join some clubs and such… something he is passionate about… if he cant find one, he can always create one.

Hes also been accepeted to many conferences and internships such as National Congress, Honor Society,

With the exception of recruited athletes, virtually all state universities select students based on gpa, class rank, scores, and having taken the required h.s. courseload.

When it comes to the type of LACs you are describing, the same holds as is the case for most public universities. In LAC admissions, in general, being male is a big plus because of the shortage of male college applicants compared to females and because the majority of males prefer to go to universities with major football teams.

I don’t think your S’s ECs will keep him out of any of the schools you mention.
