How Important Are Grades/ SAT Scores to the BFA Acting Program?

At a school like Syracuse U, grades and test scores are important. A student’s record needs to be reviewed and approved by general admissions as well as receiving a green light from Syracuse Drama on the audition.

I’m guessing there could be some gray area if a student has some sort of exceptional talent – but I do not believe it is the norm, particularly for the BFA Acting degree which requires you to not only be able to pass your acting (and other drama-related) classes but a lot of classes that are not in the drama department.

The better your grades and scores, the easier it will be to get admitted on the general admissions side. As I’m sure you’re aware, it’s just tougher generally for kids applying to college these days. There are a lot of kids with a lot of great records, grades and scores competing for the available spots.

You must be accepted academically at Syracuse through the normal admissions process. In addition, university scholarships are based on your academics.

Did this change in the last couple years? In 2009 my old S auditioned on campus and the head of the program at that time said that as long as you had over a 2.0 you would be considered.

I am sure academics are considered at SU. When the BFA program is interested in a student, the student then is considered by the admissions committee and must pass muster academically for entrance into SU. SU is like many BFA programs where academics are part of the overall admissions decision. At some colleges, academics and artistic admissions are two separate processes and at some schools, such as SU, it is all rolled into one. I doubt someone with a GPA of 2.0 and low SATs and a HS curriculum that is not demanding at all would be accepted to Syracuse.

Even if you were told that a student with at least a 2.0 would be “considered,” that only means that it is a minimum to even be looked at but when it is a competitive admissions process which SU BFA is, and there are many talented kids who pass artistic muster, someone with a 2.0 GPA is not going to rise up on the pile of those being “considered.” Saying they will “consider” your application is not the same as being willing to admit you. It’s saying they will look at your file.

What about a 3.16 and low SAT scores?

This would be on the low end for SU. Average GPA is 3.6, and average SATs would be 1610 - 1870.
