How Important are SAT scores compared to other aspects of admissions if you are an architecture major? I recently applied to Rice ED. I had a stellar interview (which they highly recommend), did an overnight stay, and put together a really good portfolio, and I’m also a urm, but I worry my SAT scores will hinder my chances greatly. My scores are in the lower 25% percent, but I fail to see how excelling on a standardized test dictates my potential to become a successful architect. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I am not sure, but I would say that most of the schools which require a portfolio usually put more emphasis on your portfolio and essay. First, then they look at your SAT/ACT scores, and I think it might just be for placement purposes. For example, if there are 50 students with an A+ portfolio, and the college is accepting only 20, they would pick the 20 that have highest sat/act scores.

But I guess it does really depend on which schools, I read somewhere in here that Syracuse looks at your portfolio first, and you might or might not be evaluated based on how good your portfolio is, like if it has really bad drawings I think they dont even see the rest of your application.

Some schools dont even require SAT or ACT scores…

I don’t think that SAT scores are the most important thing at Rice, because they place a lot of importance on the portfolio and interview. But if your SAT scores are in the bottom 25 percentile, it is probably going to raise some red flags. Any way you can get them up for regular admission if the ED does not work out?

That’s reassuring. I’ve already taken the SAT twice and the ACT once and my scores remained virtually the same each time. Standardized tests really aren’t my thing and really fail to illustrate my true potential. I honestly think taking it a third time would be a waste of time. Nonetheless, thanks for the help, hopefully things will work in my favor.
