I am thinking about applying to Medill school for Journalism. However, my concern is that in my 2 first years in high school my grades were not particulary outstanding, just average…
Is this a real problem?

It could be-when crafting your essay you may wish to address the reasons why they were 'average".

my gpa the first two years were def not stellar (3.8 uw) and not the toughest course load. my reason: slacker

the important thing is to show that your grades are going up. the admissions committee would much rather have a student whose grades start out average and gradually go up than a student who starts out with straight A+s and then bombs out

i got my act together as a junior and bumped my gpa up to a 3.9(with all classes honors or APs except one)

and i managed to get in, of course me slacking off the first two years makes me wonder what couldve happened if i did try in school because i got waitlisted by 6 other rather good schools. so perhaps if i tried slightly more i might have got into some of them
…but i would def not be dissapointed going to northwestern

Well I got into school or engineering with a 3.76uw for first 3 years…so it’s really not that bad :-p

Hey. Thanks for the responses.
Well I am an international student, so I dont really know much about the US grading system. Is 3.7 a low A? Or am I getting this completely wrong?

At my school 3.67 is the weight assigned to an A-. It’s different everywhere, but 3.7 is generally a low A, yes.
