<p>I just wanted to know about what percentage of applicants send in a supplemental rec at HYPSM. Would not sending one in hurt my chances?</p>
<p>I’m not sure anyone has statistics on this. The value of the supplemental rec arises when it comes from someone who can speak to some aspect of who you are, and what you’ve accomplished, that isn’t part of your academic record or reflected in your teacher/guidence counselor recommendations. If they are only going to reiterate what has already been said, then don’t bother. </p>
<p>that said, I’m guessing that a lot of students admitted to the top schools have indeed accomplished something exceptional - something beyond pure academic excellence and school club leadership. Consequently, they will have obtained a letter (or two) from people who know them in these other areas of their lives (work, research, performing arts, church, etc…), and it sets them apart from the pool of otherwise excellent applicants.</p>
