How important is college ranking in Communication?

A friend of mine got accepted to Luther College, communications major. Overall she’s happy, but there’s still the underlying concern that the college’s not-very-impressive rank will pose difficulties in finding job after graduation. Therefore she’s undecided about whether to enroll or to take a gap year. while I’d love to persuade her to go for Luther, I’m in no position to discuss Communications, which is not my major, with her.

Therefore I appreciate advices from communications experts. I know college ranking does not matter in the long run, but what about the short run? How would your first job application go if you weren’t an Ivy student? Is a gap year worth in this case?

Thanks very much.

Can anyone please share your experience?

This is just a theory, but I believe for liberal arts your alma mater has a correlation to your job prospects.

However, this is not to discourage anyone. If a Luther College grad has a 3.75 GPA in communications, while a Harvard grad in the same field has a 2.0, obviously the former has better prospects. And this is not even taking into account who has more extracurricular activities, more internships, more connections, etc. Harvard may have more options, but really I think it is all relative to the student.

My deepest gratitude, RedUmbrella :)
