How important is Hotel Interview?

can this make a difference?

I am a very average student, but I know I can make an alumni like me very well… I am very different than what my stat shows.

anyway, How important is it?

Going by what you have said, it sounds as though it could make or break you. To be brutally honest, it is extremely difficult for an “average” student to get into any Ivy League, or top tier school. In showing that you have a unique skills set, you can increase the chances that the admissions crew will look at your application a second time, but I can’t (as no one can) be certain as to the impact of the interview, in the totalistic scheme of your grades.

It is important to remember that you are going to a university for one primary reason – to learn. Therefore, I personally believe that your grades need to be strong, and then comes everything else.

As a generality, take every opportunity that a university (not just Cornell) offers you, it shows interest, and they like that. Make sure your letters of recommendation are good, so that it might shine a light on how hard (hopefully) you work in school, which might compensate for your “averageness”.

my gpa is 3.89 which is pretty decent/

but my SAT reading sucks, which will be kinda okay b/c my english teacher wrote an recommendation letter. He really likes me and i am very good at speaking unlike other students. (no offense to anyone)

probably my SAt is the only thing which looks bad in my app , even though it is very important after a " holistic review of applications".

I totally understand your reasoning, but Cornell will be my first choice and forever my dream school.haha I will try to transfer even if i don’t get into that school

well thanx

definitely shows that i am sufficient in reading, listening, speakin, and writing

BTW it’s kinda weird but my SAT writing is better than reading .i don’t know why…ㅠㅠ

The interview is your chance to show the admissions office that you’re a fit for the Hotel School. It’s important that you have valuable experiences that lead to you’re decision to apply. Experience in the industry and leadership experience is something they are really looking for.
I work in a grocery story, have worked on a food service team, have job shadowed with caterers and chefs, and have several leadership extracurriculars. And I got in ED.
Just be sure to show them the real you. Be natural and confident in your ability.

I did serving at several auctions also I did an internship under the care of the Executive Chef.

Even though it is not technically related to the hospitality industry, I have some service industry experience such as First Responder in an ambulance company (technically service for others right?), and accounting assistnant in hospital and so on.

I wish I have more work experiences, but anyway

What were your stats? I am sure it was way better than miine, I just got curious.

You can also PM me or you don’t have to if you are not comfortable with that.

Thanks a lot for your help guys :)

Just be able to discuss your career goals with the person. Showing your passion is the key thing.

oh yeah, and to answer your question- the interview for Hotel school is VERY VERY important. They really take your personality, professionalism, and ability to converse into account.

For other programs at Cornell and other universities, interviews do not play a major factor, but at the Hotel School, it’s a factor up there with your GPA.

interview is extremely important for hotelies. Dress professionally and treat it like a big job interview.

How is a 3.89 bad? Is that weighted or unweighted? If it’s unweighted, then you have a GPA that’s higher than the averages at most of the Ivy League schools.

Just wondering - what kind of a career outlook is there for Hotelies? Obviously it’s in the tourism industry but is it confined to hotel administration or can you go on to other tourism/business related things such as Spas or investing, etc. And what kind of an income does the average alumni make? Of course I didn’t apply to hotel school (or i would have researched this) I was just curious.

Average means 1500 SAT… lol. do u really have a 1500?

Though the degree is in Hotel Administration, only about 25-30% go into Hotel/Resort industry (property and corporate).

Other things include Consulting (real estate, finance, food service, valuation), Restaurants, Banking and Financial services, Real Estate (construction and property management), Clubs/ Resorts, Information technology.

Also, almost all students choose a concentration when they are in the Hotel school, which include: managerial communication, financial management, human resources, food and beverage management, operations, real estate development and law, facilities and design, marketing, and more

I got all this from all the info and mailings they sent me :D

They’re okay. I’m about a 3.8-3.9 unweighted. way above that weighted. SATs terrible (1210), but I got a 30 on the ACT. I’m 14th in a class of 338. But I think as long as your recommendations, essays, and interview go well you’ll do well. IDK Tell me what

I just checked this posts today, and I was very happy to see your guys’ interest for my question whether it was really that or not.

I have 1230/1900 or 1920

I do a lot of extracurricular activities instead of joining whole bunch, but rather participating in those for at least 2 or three years continuously.

I am sure I can be seen as a very dedicated person through my app.

I am really excited for my upcoming interview pretty soon.

compared to all the ivy league applicants, I have a terrible SAT score.

lolz … :(

Bump///…

why do you keep bumping this? You already got an entire page of replies with one conclusive answer: the interview for the Hotel School is extremely important.
