How important is Insurance?

How do I assess whether buying Yale insurance is worth it? What does it cover and do I actually have to worry about my laptop getting stolen?

You should take the standard pre-cautions with your laptop. Obviously, it is not smart to leave your laptop unattended at the library or on the lawn on Old Campus. I haven’t heard of anyone’s laptop being stolen and certainly leaving it in the common room of your room is perfectly fine. Just remember to close your door when you leave. Laptops are constantly left in Bass Library for hours on end and students rarely have any problems. I don’t think the Yale insurance is worth it or even necessary. If you are smart you’re never going to have anything stolen from you.

Are you asking about the Personal Property Insurance Coverage form we received? That looks like $2000 of coverage for $55, plus $25 for $1000 accidental damage coverage. I assume this covers computers, phone, ipod, cameras so to me that seems a pretty good deal as it covers you for theft or if you drop something. Anyone have any experience with this coverage?
