How important is neatness on the SAT essay?

Will i be penalized for crossing out words and using those little arrows to insert words?

My teen has mild dysgraphia, where “h’s” look like “l’s,” and letters are scribbled close together, and sentences slant down the line. But, not bad enough, nor desired by him, to be accommodated.

He did very well on his writing section on both the SAT and the ACT. He is a great writer. Still, if the grader can read his handwriting, a few ^ or — throughs shouldn’t faze them. The graders are there for content not penmenship.

Good luck!
