How important is the school if i want to be an actuary?

<p>Hi, I’m a senior in high school right now, i’m accepted at Colorado State Fort Collins (decent school, they accept about 50%) and also CSU Pueblo (less hard to get into, less majors, almost like a community college) They really don’t associate with eachother despite the same school name.</p>

<p>Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction about whether it’s worth the extra money and room and board (i could just commute to CSU Pueblo) to go to Fort Collins and get a Mathematics major with an emphasis in Actuarial Sciences, or if its equally good to go to CSU Pueblo and just get a Mathematics major. Additionally, CSU Fort Collins has invited me to the honors program, and CSU Pueblo doesn’t have one as far as I’m aware.</p>

<p>I’m super advanced in math and have about 15 transfer credits from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs from concurrent enrollment while in high school.</p>

<p>I’ve also got about 30 credit hours of AP Classes that should transfer at both CSU’s so i’m planning to do college in 3 years if i can after i get some replies from admissions at both schools.</p>

<p>I’ve got a 30 on the ACT, 36 in the math section, and a 3.6 GPA u/w and 4.2 weighted</p>

<p>As far as being an actuary, it is really about the tests rather than the degree. That said, internships, networking, career services, etc also play a part. There are many actuaries graduating without good jobs right now, and the right networking makes a difference.
More importantly, do you want the typical college experience? If both schools were equal in terms of opportunity, I would normally say take the cheaper option. In this case, I would say take the school with the best academics. You may change your mind about your major, and you want to be in a place where high quality academics are possible. The honors program will challenge you, and living on a campus is something that, if affordable, should not be missed.</p>
