How important is varsity in applications?

Does it make a big difference? For example, is there a huge advantage in being varsity and getting a letter than being just JV?

Your overall profile is more important than any one feature in your application. That said, you are up against the other people who are involved with the following activities in addition to excellent academics:
Activities Profile Fall 2007 class
Community service involvement 592
Varsity athletes 434
Multilingual 296
Club/organization presidents 245
Drama/debate participants 162
Student government members 144
Research experience 95
Class presidents 23
Boys/Girls State participants 20
Editors-in-chief
(yearbook and newspaper)
38
Student Council presidents 17

Actually varsity or no varsity makes little difference. Yes varsity looks better but until you won a state championship, it means nothing. What really matters is the number of hours you put into it. A person on JV who practices two hour a day will most likely beat a kid who is on varsity but only practices one hour a day. They want to see dedication, they care about the number of hours you put into the activity more than if your on varsity or not.

What does multilingual mean? In the school context. Like I’m Vietnamese and I speak it, and I’m also learning French and Spanish and I speak English obviously.

Multilingual means you can speak numerous languages fluently. You can’t claim to be multilingual if you only know a couple words in a language. You have to be able to have a conversation comfortable to be truly multilingual.
