Hi! I am a high school senior who is applying to different colleges at this moment. I have been the U.S. for two years and considering my limitations in English language, I only have a SAT score of 1540. I have a 10 in my essay, but my reading score was very bad. Anyway, I am 7th in my class with a g.p.a. of 4.20 on a scale of 5.0. I took my TOEFL and got 91. So, I am wondering does my SAT score is going to hinder my possibilities of getting into Good schools? I am applying to B.U., B.C., Tufts, Northeastern, Umass Boston, Mass College of Pharmacy.

wuts ur math score?

My scores are- C.R.-470, Math- 540 and Writing- 530, essay-10

one possibility for you might be taking the ACT, which is more knowledge based. A score of 1500s will definitely kill your chances of going to some schools, since SAT scores are one of the first things schools look at when determining which applicants to eliminate. Therefore, if you do not see an increase of about 100 points in each section, it isn’t too likely you will have a high chance in top schools. The easiest section to improve on is math, so study math a lot, and you will almost be guaranteed an 800 in it, and raise your score about 250 without too much difficulty.

Yeah, okay. I found it hard enough to go from a 710 math to a 780, and you’re proposing a 540 to an 800 is easy? Not in your dreams, sir.

@ the OP: Focus on reading a comprehensive review book like, say, Barron’s. Learn the important vocabulary words, definitely learn all the math facts and grammar rules, and then just take all the practice exams. This could be done during a winter break before the January exam.

I guess a 250 point jump is a bit too high, considering the fact that he is a senior already (missed that part when I read the first post the first time). However, students from foreign countries generally learn more in school, so it is reasonable to assume that he has a firm understanding of Algebra and Geometry by 10th grade (when he moved here to the U.S.). With a sound base in Math, a less amazing score of simply 700+ should be easily reachable, at the very least.
