How is GPA calculated?

Because of my very low GPA (2.7) when I received my BA in Public Policy (four years ago), I am currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree- I am halfway through with a 3.6 GPA.

Will admissions committees focus more on my current academic record, or will they cumulate my GPA from both institutions (which comes up to just below a 3.0)?

I am looking to apply to Masters programs in Journalism or Mass Communications. I am thinking Georgetown’s CCT, Medill, Columbia, Mizzou among others. Am I aiming too high?

I have a solid resume (lots of volunteer work and currently working for a national NGO), still working on taking my GRE’s. Looking for freelancing opportunities in the summer.

I am bumping this!

I think your cumulative GPA will include your 1st degree, but they will probably only focus on the later work. Try calling one of the offices and asking them what their policy is on that, since you are doing a 2nd degree. You will still need to get transcripts for the 1st degree no matter what.

Most policies state that they only consider the last two years of coursework though I am aware that all of my transcripts will come under scrutiny and this could limit my chances severely.

Having a low GPA is one of the most sobering things anyone could have. Sad but true.
