How is Need Met?

I’m applying to many Ivies and all of their tution rates are 40K+. My efc is around half of that. For the 100% need-met ivies, how will that 20K be given? Will i have a 10K loan or will they award some grants as well?

Thanks for your help guys

This varies by university. To get a sense of the average packages, you can subscribe to the premium edition of US News and World Report. I think it’s $20 or $25 for a year’s access. You can see what the typical applicant gets in terms of the split between loans and grants. Someone at CC suggested it to me and I’ve found it very helpful. I don’t know if US News has the same information in their paper products.

go to www.collegeboard.com and look up the schools you’re applying to. there info on wat % of aid given out are loans/grants

Remember, though, that all these statistics are merely averages. Any individual student could end up with all grants, or all loans. There’s no way to tell.

Though Ivies guarantee 100% of need, they do not define need by FAFSA EFC, so you need to run your numbers through their individual calculators. They tend to use PROFILE which takes other things into consideration. Although the top ivies, particularly, tend to be generous in aid, you may get self help aid in addition to grants, and it is individual as to the breakdowns. You can get averages, but they may not apply to you. But those numbers can give you some idea what an average package looks like at a given school.
