How is Political Science at Rutgers???

hi i’m an incoming student from Korea!
is poli sci program really intense at RU?
i’m worried :frowning: not sure if i can manage my gpa well …

You will be fine. A lot of the polisci classes are known to be easier than most other classes at Rutgers - there are the hard ones and the easy ones though. Just pick the right teacher (ratemyprofessor.com) and work hard - poli sci is such an interesting subject and the professors that I’ve encountered so far are pretty good.

Thanks Lurker!

Okay, first of all. Do not go to ratemyprofessor.com. It is a terrible site for the most part where you get the students who failed classes bash their teachers. Or you get the opposite where you have only students who overachieved in a class.

As far as poli sci at Rutgers, I would not say the classes are easier than other classes by the amount of the work. I think it is just the nature of the game, you read an assignment, retain it and test it opposed to math where you need to absolutely know how to do something. I would say it is definitley manageable and very rewarding to take poli sci classes at Rutgers. A lot of professors are renowned in the field.

I think that ratemyprofessor.com should be regarded as any other word-of-mouth source: not the final word, but something to be considered.

The best solution is to sit in on professors’ classes before you choose. I’m amazed at how few people do this. We’re not all the same, so there is no substitute for your own experience. Of course, that doesn’t help sushisushi for choosing classes from overseas…

Ratemyprofessor.com is exactly accurate but at least it gives you an idea of what to expect rather than just choosing someone randomly. People have different preferences and looking at the ratings for some professors will let you narrow down your choices based on grading policy or the way the class is taught.

Pretty difficult to do unless you plan extremely far ahead. Add/Drop period isn’t that long and you’re already busy in the beginning of the year settling in. Classes fill up really fast, and if you drop one, you’re not guaranteed to get into the other class you want to, etc.

can you recommend some good courses(Social Science/Humanities) for me? i mean not that extremely hard but interesting and manageable for international freshmen.(sorry. too vague?)
btw do you know when the course registration day is?

I am a Poli Sci minor (at Rutgers you only need to complete 7 course to finish the minor and I’m one course away) and I must say the professors in general are very good and very helpful but from my experiences the classes involved a lot of reading and a lot of work.

For example, I took American Constitutional Law, it was a very interesting class with a cool professor but it was a ton of work and the exams are hypothetical essays. You have to brief many cases which involves reading some confusing text at times, especially the older cases haha

For me it is morw work than history, which is my major, but definetely not as hard as the mathematics or sciences at Rutgers
